Today's Gospel: John 6:22-29

The crowd searched for Jesus not to fill their souls, but to fill their stomachs. He had given them one free meal, perhaps He’d do it again. But the food they were seeking would satiate them for only a short while; it would not truly fulfill them.

It’s natural, even necessary, to want to nourish our bodies. If we don’t, we’ll grow physically weak or become ill. It’s also part of our nature to be drawn to pleasure and avoid discomfort. The trouble comes when we focus only on nourishing our bodies and forget that we must first nourish our souls. When I look around me, I see people doing this all the time. What feels good takes precedent over what is good, and they follow whomever promises to fulfill their superficial needs. I see it in the entertainment and fashion industries as well as in the food, technology, and beauty industries. It’s everywhere. The crowds flock to whomever promises to grant them power, prestige, or convenience.

It’s so easy to fall into that and I’ve been guilty of it myself by chasing after something that promises to make me more comfortable or feel better about myself. New clothes, a new gadget, comfort food that my body doesn’t really need. Instead of saying “I want that,” I should be asking “What does God want for me?”

Ponder:

Where is your weak spot? What lures you to chose what feels good rather than what is good for you?

Pray:

Heavenly Father, my body and soul are holy because You made them. Thank You for giving them to me. Please grant me the grace to always seek to nourish my soul before anything else.
