Today's Gospel: John 14:6-14

I sometimes think I have spiritual amnesia.

God has been faithful to me many times over. God has provided, been present in suffering, and given amazing joys. But then a challenge comes and Jesus asks me to lean in, to trust Him, to give more of my life to Him. And I say, “I’m not so sure about that. How do I know I can trust You?”

Jesus tells His disciples,

“I am the way and the truth and the life.”

Not only does He tell them—He shows them. They see Jesus’ works, find freedom in His words, and experience the new life He alone can give.

But they, too, seem to suffer from spiritual amnesia. Philip pushes for a little more security—

“. . . show us the Father, and that will be enough for us.”

To Philip and to me (and possibly to you, too), Jesus poses the question:

“Have I been with you for so long a time and you still do not know me?”

Let’s take a moment together to be cut to the heart by Jesus’ words. The next time we want to push Jesus for just a little more before we give ourselves to Him, let’s remember how good and faithful our God has been to us and simply say, “Yes, Lord. I trust that You are the way and the truth and the life. I give myself to You.”

Ponder:

What practice can you put in place as an antidote for spiritual amnesia?

Pray:

Come, Holy Spirit. Give us minds and hearts that hold and treasure stories of Your faithfulness. Help us to give Jesus our love, trust, and fidelity at all times.
