Today's Gospel: John 14:7-14

In this excerpt from Jesus’s words during the Last Supper, Phillip asks that Jesus show the disciples the Father, “and that will be enough for us.”’

I can hear the heartbreak in Jesus’s voice as He replies,

“Have I been with you for so long a time and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?”

Phillip and the other disciples had three years of intimacy with Jesus, and witnessed firsthand so many of His works and miracles that John finishes his Gospel with,

“There are also many other things that Jesus did, but if these were to be described individually, I do not think the whole world would contain the books that would be written.”

Did the miracles become ho-hum? Did Jesus’s divine nature become so predictable as to be mundane? And even more disappointing, this outrageous request comes on the eve of His passion.

What is “enough” for me?

Do I need a miracle as a foundation for my faith? A Eucharistic miracle, to truly believe that Jesus is present in the sacred Body and Blood? When I pray, do I recognize the answer when it comes?

Or have I, apparently like Phillip, become inured to the glory and mercy and grace right in front of me? Have I become blasé and complacent? Have I forgotten the tender and consuming love that Jesus has for me?

Would I recognize Jesus if He walked through my front door today? Can I find Him closer still, in my heart, where He longs to dwell?

What is “enough” for me?

May the Holy Spirit open my eyes and my heart to God-With-Us, and let that be “enough.”

Ponder:

What is "enough" for me today?

Pray:

Come, Holy Spirit! Open my eyes and my heart to Jesus's presence in my life, and for that to be "enough."
