Join us as we reflect, ponder, and pray together inspired by today's Gospel.

Today's Gospel: John 6:35-40

I remember a day, not so long ago, when my daughter told me something that seemed quite unlikely. Though I don’t remember what she said or the particular circumstance, I remember replying, “I’ll believe it when I see it.”

There is a similar saying in our modern society: Seeing is believing. Both statements reflect our human tendency to want signs and concrete proof before believing something to be true.

Knowing this tendency, Jesus says to those following Him,

“Although you have seen me, you do not believe.” John 6:36

And He says later to Thomas, “Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed” (John 20:29).

Jesus calls us to come to Him and believe in Him, not because we have seen Him with our human eyes but because we have looked upon Him with eyes of faith. “We walk by faith, not by sight,” St. Paul proclaims to the Corinthians (2 Corinthians 5:7).

We look at the Eucharist and see bread. We receive communion and taste bread. God has provided numerous Eucharistic miracles that prove to our senses that the Eucharist is truly Jesus. However, unless we go on pilgrimage, most of us will never see that physical evidence with our own eyes. Yet, we are called to believe anyway.

Jesus says that whoever comes to Him and believes will no longer hunger or thirst and will have eternal life. Whoever receives Him will have life in and through Him.

We are called to believe and to come to our Lord. To open our hearts and receive. To recognize His presence with us and within us and let Him fill us and redeem us, even if we never see any evidence with our eyes.

Sometimes seeing is believing, but often believing is something much more profound.

Ponder:

Is it difficult for me to believe or to come to Jesus? What can I do to open my heart to receiving Him more deeply?

Pray:

Lord, it can be difficult to turn to You when I don’t sense Your presence or see signs that You are here with me. Faith tells me You are here with me and are present in the Blessed Sacrament. Help me to open my heart to receive You.
