Today's Gospel: John 13:16-20
In today’s Gospel, Jesus Christ is preparing His Apostles for what is to come. He knows that He will be crucified and die and that He will rise on the third day. He knows that He will ascend to the Father after His resurrection, and that He will send His Holy Spirit to be with the Apostles, and with the whole Church, after He returns to heaven. Jesus knows that He will not leave them orphans. He will not abandon those whom He loves.
We all received the Holy Spirit at our Baptism, when we were cleansed of original sin and filled with the divine life of God. This life within us was reinforced at our Confirmation. We are filled with the Holy Spirit, and by the power of the Holy Spirit, we receive Jesus Christ in the Eucharist. Jesus Christ appears as bread and wine for us to consume. Our Lord becomes physical food so that we can be spiritually fed. We receive Jesus Christ as food for eternal life. And when we receive Jesus, we receive the Father. Filled with the Holy Spirit and nourished by the Eucharist, we are set on the path to eternal life, an eternity spent with God the Father in heaven.
When Jesus was speaking to His Apostles, He had us in mind too. He knew He wasn’t going to abandon us. He wouldn’t leave us orphans when He returned to the Father. God made it so that we can always go to the Father. He is always with us. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, Jesus Christ gives Himself to us. And by giving Himself to us, He gives us the Father. And because of that, we are never alone. We are always in the presence of the Triune God.
Ponder:
Do you treat the Eucharist as the encounter with God that it is? How might you approach the Eucharist more reverently in the future?
Pray:
Lord, You said that when we receive You, we receive the Father. Help us to really see the Eucharist as the encounter with God that it is. Help us to prepare our hearts so that we might receive You as worthily as possible.
