Join us as we reflect, ponder, and pray together inspired by today's Gospel.

Today's Gospel: John 10:22-30

How do we recognize the voice of the Good Shepherd? Jesus would not answer the question, “Are you the Messiah?” because it was His works that should have testified to His identity if the people knew their Scripture.

We all pray that our eyes, ears, and hearts will be open to the will of God, to discern well, to receive guidance for raising and loving our children, but how do we know if what we sense, hear, or think is the voice of the Holy Spirit or not?

When I can distinguish someone’s voice, it is usually because of repetition. There is a familiarity that only comes with having spent an abundance of time listening to that person. Jesus is not going talk to us out loud (although honestly, I wish He would sometimes when my life is particularly noisy), but as we spend more time in prayer, reading Scripture, attending Mass, and being still in Adoration, movements in prayer will become familiar, and we will know it is God’s voice. This committed prayer life will also help us determine if the voices we hear are not the Good Shepherd.

In a similar way, no one should have to ask us if we are Catholic Christians. It should be obvious in the many ways we feed the hungry and thirsty, clothe the naked, shelter the homeless, visit the sick and prisoners, and bury the dead. Our daily devotionals and Mass attendance are all beautiful ways to practice our faith, but our children will learn more about being a Christian in the way we love God by loving others. This witness will help them learn how to hear the voice of God.

Ponder:

Do we spend enough time in prayer and Scripture to recognize the voice of God?

Pray:

Almighty God, thank You for sending your son, Jesus, to teach us how to love one another. Open our eyes, ears, and hearts to know Your will and respond in obedience.
