Today's Gospel: John 15:9-17
As mothers, it can be very easy for us to get caught up in wanting our children to follow the rules of the faith. Go to Confession, attend Mass, observe Holy Days. Do this, and this, but not that, or that. Of course, this is a necessary part of our children’s formation, especially knowing how many of today’s parents were poorly catechized during our own childhoods. Today’s Gospel, though, reminds us of the reason we emphasize these rules and teachings: because they help us to remain in God’s love.
Sometimes, we get so worried about the rules and whether our children are following them closely enough, that we neglect to teach the fact that we are not slaves to Jesus, but His friends, and that we follow the rules not out of fear or mere obligation, but out of true love for our Savior. When we admonish our children to obey Our Lord’s commands, we should also remember to emphasize the great love Jesus demonstrated when He gave up His life for us on the cross. Our kids need to see us acting not as mere enforcers, but as dedicated adorers of the Lamb of God who wish to live in accordance with His word, and to teach our children to do the same.
Ponder:
As I raise them in the Catholic faith, how can I remind my children of God’s great love for them?
Pray:
Dear Jesus, please help me to always remain in Your love by followingYour commandments and helping the children entrusted to me to do the same.
