Go to Confession, attend Mass, observe Holy Days. Do this, and this, but not that, or that. Of course, this is a necessary part of our children’s formation, especially knowing how many of today’s parents were poorly catechized during our own childhoods. Today’s Gospel, though, reminds us of the reason we emphasize these rules and teachings: because they help us to remain in God’s love. Sometimes, we get so worried about the rules and whether our children are following them closely enough, that we neglect to teach the fact that we are not slaves to Jesus, but His friends, and that we follow the rules not out of fear or mere obligation, but out of true love for our Savior. When we admonish our children to obey Our Lord’s commands, we should also remember to emphasize the great love Jesus demonstrated when He gave up His life for us on the cross.
