Find comfort in the promise of eternal joy amid life's struggles. Embrace hope and God's goodness as you reflect on today's Gospel message.
Today's Gospel: John 16:20-23
What a comfort today's Gospel is! Its reassurance that our earthly sufferings, sadness, and strife are merely temporary is balm to world-weary souls. It is so easy to be caught up in the day-to-day duties and activities of family life that we forget we are made for eternity.
Preparing His disciples for His ascension and the coming of the Holy Spirit, Jesus says,
"But I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy away from you."
As I re-read those words--"no one will take your joy away from you"--I am filled with hope. In this life, there will be good days and bad days, happy moments and sad moments, years that are smooth sailing and difficult seasons that threaten to defeat us. And yet God's promises are so good!
Let us be assured of God's goodness and the promise of eternal joy, not letting passing trials prevent us from setting our eyes on heaven.
Ponder:
Do I let troubles and difficulties, large or small, prevent me from holding tightly to God's promise of eternal joy?
Pray:
Lord, help me to always keep God's promise of joy in mind, not being discouraged by grief, pain, or suffering.
Pray Together:
Share times when you felt joy, distinguishing between it and happiness, which can be fleeting. What do you feel when you consider God's promise that "no one will take your joy away from you?"
