Today's Gospel: John 15:1-8

In today’s Gospel reading, Christ tells His apostles:

“I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit, because without me you can do nothing.”

Indeed, without God we can do nothing. Everything we have comes from Him. God wants us to bear fruit. That means that He wants us to grow in faith and in love. He wants us to see people with His eyes. He wants us to follow His laws. He wants all of this because He wants us!

We matter to Him! And He wants us for all eternity.

So often we feel inconsequential or unnoticed, but God notices everything. God never forgets us. He loves us. And He wants us to become closer to Him.

How do we do that? We pray, we learn about our faith, we give of ourselves to others, and we work every day toward bearing the fruits from the seeds He plants.

Christ goes on to say,

“Anyone who does not remain in Me will be thrown out like a branch and wither.”

When we allow God to make a difference in our lives, that fruit will be abundant. Yet when we do not, we feel like that withered branch, barely alive inside.

Anyone who has known someone “on fire” for the faith can see the joy that exudes from that person. When we see that, we long for that kind of faith, especially if we have been withering.

So let us pray today for strength to grow, for the determination to increase our faith, and the courage to lead our lives as Christ commands.

Ponder:

How will we produce fruit for Christ?

Pray:

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for all of Your blessings. Please help us become closer to You as we strive to do Your will and live our lives as You want.
