Reflect on Jesus's High Priestly Prayer, highlighting His intercession for our protection and the importance of prayer in our lives. Discover the call to glorify God.

Today's Gospel: John 17:1-11a

Today’s passage from John’s Gospel contains the High Priestly Prayer of Jesus, which takes place in between the Last Supper and His arrest. Jesus has accomplished His mission on earth and is preparing to enter the Passion imminently. It is significant in that Jesus prays intentionally for His disciples and those to whom they preach, that they may attain the perfect union with God that Jesus already enjoys. It is a prayer for protection, guidance, and glorification. How wonderful it is to think of Our Lord praying fervently for our protection, when so much of the time it is the other way around--we implore God for our own safety and that of others. I reflect on our military families, who continuously raise their eyes to heaven and petition to God for the safety of their loved ones, both at home and when serving in harm’s way. It is humbling to think that before His arrest, the Good Shepherd’s prayers were for us.

This passage underscores that Jesus is the model for all prayer. His intercession shows us why praying for both the living and the dead is a true spiritual work of mercy. Jesus’s example teaches us to pray with filial love and to persevere in our prayer until the Kingdom of God is fully realized.

Ponder:

If Jesus were praying for you today, what do you think He would pray for?

Pray:

Lord, teach us to pray. May we glorify You in everything we do this day.

Pray Together:

Lift up the names of any family members or friends experiencing hardship. Request a Mass intention for them or for a friend or family member who has passed away.
