Discover how the tendency to compare ourselves to others can distance us from Christ. Focus on your personal relationship with Jesus through reflection and prayer.
Today's Gospel: John 21:20-25
“But why me? What about Luke?” That phrase was heard frequently in our house as Mark, the older brother, complained about some kind of unjust treatment. You have probably heard a similar phrase from your own kids when it’s time to do family chores or about something that was perceived as not quite fair. This is essentially what Peter is saying in this passage: What about everyone else?
Don’t we do that ourselves? Do we tend to compare, focusing on our brother rather than paying attention to what we need to do to maintain and grow our relationship with Christ?
I’m awful about this. I don’t just compare families, I compare work, finances, weight, attire, and more! This person has had it so easy; that person would never be where they are if they had to endure what I have; how can she stay so thin?; how in the world did they get that much money? Have you had similar thoughts?
We even tend to compare our faith lives. I read my Bible way more than she does; I do much more for the Church than he does; I’m a much better Catholic than they are. These kinds of thoughts are the beginnings of sinful comparison, which leads us further and further away from Christ.
Here, Peter wants to know the score, but Jesus stops him in his tracks, basically saying, “Peter, it’s none of your business. Stop worrying about him and worry about yourself.” Jesus tells us the same: “Don’t worry about them. I want to be close to YOU, so focus on you and Me!”
Let’s focus on our own relationship with Jesus, drawing as close as we can, every minute of the day.
Ponder:
Do I compare myself to others in any way? How does comparing draw me away from Christ?
Pray:
Lord help me to know Your unconditional love for me, just as I am.
Pray Together:
When tempted to compare myself (favorably or unfavorably) to others, ask, “How does Jesus see me?”
