Today's Gospel: John 16:5-11

Any parent can relate to the heartbreak of dropping a teary-eyed child off to school for their first day. I’ve lived it three times, yet the third was perhaps the most difficult. Our youngest has Down Syndrome and her delays complicated her ability to understand why I was leaving her with strangers and perhaps most importantly, that I would be back for her in a few short hours.

Jesus’ disciples were in a similar place when it was time for Jesus to depart this earth and rejoin His Heavenly Father. They were not able to understand the reason behind Jesus’ need to depart, nor could they comprehend the challenges they would face in continuing His work. Jesus was quick to try and quell their fears and confusion with the news that He would send the Holy Spirit to be with them.

Much like it takes a new student time to come to know and trust their teacher, each one of Jesus’ disciples needed time to mourn their dear friend from whom they did not want to part and time to come to know and trust their new teacher, the Holy Spirit.

When our daughter began pre-school, it didn’t take long for the teachers to take note of her fiery spirit and unquenchable thirst for attention. You might say she “convicted” them on day one, believing she had every right to keep them on their toes at all times and persuading them it would be in their best interest to stay closely tuned in to her every move.

In much the same way, the Holy Spirit did not come quietly and certainly not meekly. Rather, the third person of the Trinity came with every intention of upholding the teachings of Jesus and honoring His suffering, death, and resurrection through the conviction of each and every soul to avoid sin, live righteously, and replace judgment of one another with love.

Ponder:

Has there been a time in your life where you clearly felt the Holy Spirit leading you in a direction you would not have chosen on your own?

Pray:

Thank You, holy Father, for sending us the Holy Spirit to convict us of all that is holy and just and for being patient with us as we respond to the gentle guidance of Your beautiful and perfect Spirit. Help us to stay focused on hearing the Spirit’s quiet whispers and give us the courage to walk with You in all things.
