Explore how to teach children the importance of reverence in church, emphasizing that our churches are sacred spaces dedicated to prayer and worship.

Today's Gospel: Mark 11:11-26

Today’s Gospel is a challenging one for people who imagine Jesus as a very mild-mannered, gentle figure. It is jarring to see Our Lord flip over tables and stun the crowd into scared silence. But this Gospel tells us something important about our religious spaces. It matters deeply to Jesus that we keep those spaces set apart for their intended purpose. Our churches should be, first, foremost, and fully houses of prayer.

There are many simple things to do to model for our children that Catholic churches are sacred spaces where Our Lord is truly present. In our family, we dress differently for church than we do for other activities. Wearing specific clothes just for Mass helps us remember that a church is a different place than anywhere else we go. We teach even our littlest kids to genuflect to the tabernacle and to bow when passing the altar, acknowledging that the Blessed Sacrament is present and showing due reverence to Jesus. We also work on sitting quietly, praying silently, following along with the Mass, and focusing our attention on the Eucharist during the consecration. By behaving in a more subdued and solemn manner in church, we remind ourselves why we are there and what we are there to do.

Ponder:

How can I make sure my children treat our parish church as a house of prayer?

Pray:

Jesus, help me model for my children the way we should act in churches where You are present, and help them to learn how to love and revere You.

Pray Together:

Ask your children to share how they show reverence to Jesus in His house of prayer. Brainstorm something more you can do together to express your understanding that church is a sacred place.
