My kids might not use the same turn of phrase, but they have definitely yelled something along the lines of “you can’t make me” or “you’re not the boss of me,” which at its heart is what the scribes and elders are saying to Jesus. I know not to engage in a yelling match or a debate about why I’m in charge. When I’m at my best, I don’t feel the need to prove myself. But of course, I’m not always at my best. Thankfully, Christ is, and He is the model for all of us parents. Ever wise and prudent, He sidestepped their questions with one of His own, not letting them distract Him from what He’s doing: teaching the people. Today’s Gospel is a fitting one for the saint the Church celebrates today, Pope Saint Paul VI, a man whose papacy was marked by questions of authority. Paul VI is the pope who closed the Second Vatican Council and the man who wrote the encyclical *Humanae Vitae*. Many Catholics questioned his authority, and some, unfortunately, still do today, but Pope Paul VI never got caught in the weeds of defending himself. He simply continued on, praying, discerning, and shepherding his flock.
