Reflect on the Gospel of Mark and the authority of Pope Saint Paul VI as we seek wisdom in parenting and guidance in our roles as shepherds.

Today's Gospel: Mark 11:27-33

As a parent, I can really relate to Jesus in this passage. My kids might not use the same turn of phrase, but they have definitely yelled something along the lines of “you can’t make me” or “you’re not the boss of me,” which at its heart is what the scribes and elders are saying to Jesus.

I know not to engage in a yelling match or a debate about why I’m in charge. When I’m at my best, I don’t feel the need to prove myself. But of course, I’m not always at my best.

Thankfully, Christ is, and He is the model for all of us parents. Ever wise and prudent, He sidestepped their questions with one of His own, not letting them distract Him from what He’s doing: teaching the people.

Today’s Gospel is a fitting one for the saint the Church celebrates today, Pope Saint Paul VI, a man whose papacy was marked by questions of authority.

Paul VI is the pope who closed the Second Vatican Council and the man who wrote the encyclical Humanae Vitae. Many Catholics questioned his authority, and some, unfortunately, still do today, but Pope Paul VI never got caught in the weeds of defending himself. He simply continued on, praying, discerning, and shepherding his flock.

Today, let us ask for the intercession of Pope Saint Paul VI that we, as parents, can be sturdy shepherds to our children, that we might know and stand firm in our identity, our authority, and our need for Christ’s wisdom in using it.

Ponder:

What does it take for you to feel confident in the authority you have?

Pray:

Dear Lord, guide us with Your wisdom and prudence as we shepherd our children and any other souls You have put in our care.

Pray Together:

Take a few moments in the morning to ask for wisdom in your parenting for the day.
