Today's Gospel: Luke 1:39-56

I work at the University of Notre Dame. There are many famous statues on our campus: statues of Jesus, football coaches, Moses (I’ll admit I thought this was Neptune for a long while), Father Theodore Hesburgh linking arms with Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. And the most famous statue, which sits at the top of the iconic golden dome: our mother, Mary. But my favorite statue sits in front of the bookstore: the visitation. Mary and Elizabeth are wrapped in each other’s arms. It’s not the shinest, tallest, or most famous, but it is my favorite.

It is hard to relate to what was happening in Mary’s life. She had been visited by an angel and told she was to be the mother of the Son of God. She was chosen:

“You have found favor with God.” Luke 1:30

After the angel Gabriel tells Mary what will happen, she travels alone to the home of her relative Elizabeth. She seeks out this woman who is also miraculously pregnant. I imagine them embracing, crying, and in awe of what has happened to them. This scenario I can relate to. She sought someone she loved, someone who understood, someone to comfort her, and who would ask nothing from her. I pray we all have an Elizabeth to run to when our world ceases to make sense.

Ponder:

What yes is God nudging us to in our life today?

Pray:

Lord, thank You for the example of these holy women. Please help us to say yes to the things you lead us to, even when they seem impossible.
