Today's Gospel: Luke 1:39-56
Too often I find myself letting my thoughts and plans get ahead of God’s directions. When I was ten, my parents took me skiing. I had convinced my dad to take me to a harder slope after a single ski lesson. At the top, I realized that my enthusiasm far outweighed my abilities! My dad told me that we would stop before each turn to take it easy and slow. Well, extra slippery conditions kept me from stopping where I was supposed to. I flew down the mountain forgetting anything I learned that morning. Eventually, I wiped out, tumbled several feet, and cracked my ski on my forehead. Amazingly, I had no broken bones and managed to go very slowly down the mountain with some instruction from my aunt and uncle. Future family vacations were always in warmer climates!
Mary didn’t have that problem. Mary was given an incredible revelation of the purpose God had for her life, to be the Mother of God! Mary didn’t start planning the nursery and buying maternity clothes. She heard God’s plan for her in the moment, and she headed off to the hill country to help Elizabeth. Mary did the next right thing in her life, and both she and Elizabeth reaped the benefits. What a blessing that both Mary and Elizabeth understood the miracles that each of them carried and had those months together to love and support each other. Mary did not try to control the pace of the journey she was on. Mary waited on God’s next instruction and lived fully in the present moment. She trusted God to guide her each and every step, through joy and pain. May we have the grace to do the same.
Ponder:
Is there a situation in your life where you’ve gotten ahead of God’s will that keeps you from living in the present moment?
Pray:
God, thank You for the gift of Mary’s example. Please help us to emulate Mary’s patience and faith in following the path You have opened before us at the pace You have chosen for us.
