Explore the importance of giving ourselves to God in today's reflection on Mark 12:13-17, and discover ways to deepen your spiritual commitment.
Today's Gospel: Mark 12:13-17
The Pharisees and Herodians wanted to trap Jesus. They asked Him about paying the tax to Caesar, thinking there was no way out for Him. If Jesus said yes, pay the tax, He would've offended the Israelites, who resented the Roman occupation, and they would view Him as a traitor. If Jesus said no, don’t pay the tax, they could report Him to the Roman authorities, who would arrest Him for His rebellion.
Jesus responds by requesting a denarius and asking whose image is on it. When they replied that it was Caesar’s, Jesus tells them to “repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God” (Mark 12:17). Caesar’s likeness is on the coin, so there lies his authority. Caesar created the coins, and his authority is of this world. Therefore, the question of paying the tax is neither blaspheming God nor rejecting Roman rule. It is simply a matter that concerns the material world.
The matters of the spiritual world, what belongs to God, is a different situation. We each were created in the image and likeness of God. That means that each one of us bears the likeness of the Almighty God on our very selves. All we have to do is look in the mirror to see His likeness reflected back to us.
Jesus is telling us that what belongs to God is our entire selves, our hearts, minds, soul, and strength. There is nothing of ourselves that we should refrain from repaying to God, for it all belongs to him.
The likeness of the empire’s ruler is imprinted on a coin, a symbol of the material. The likeness of the universe’s ruler is imprinted on each one of us. We are to give each only and exactly what they are due.
Ponder:
In what ways do I repay to God what belongs to God? In what ways could I do this better?
Pray:
Almighty God, You have created me in Your image and likeness. Help me to always reflect You to everyone I encounter and remember to Whom I belong.
Pray Together:
Donate items from your home to a local charity as a way to detach from the material things of this world.
