Today's Gospel: Matthew 5:13-16

You are the light of the world. . . . You are the salt of the earth.

It’s a pretty tall order. Without salt, food loses its flavor. Without light, people are lost. I don’t know about you, but I don’t often feel like I can be the light of the world. Sometimes, I feel like I’m floundering in the dark, the last person who should be expected to light the way for others.

And yet, that’s what the Lord asks of me. Of you. Of all Christians. In a world that’s full of darkness, we are called to be the light. In a world that often feels like it’s lost its flavor—its beauty, its vibrancy—we are called to find and share it.

Sometimes, whether through imposter syndrome or a false humility, we are tempted to hide our light under a bushel basket rather than setting it on a lampstand. But in Christ, there are no imposters. In the gifts of the Holy Spirit, we are given everything we need to shine brightly. The apostles, to whom Jesus was speaking, probably didn’t feel equipped to be the light of the world. And they weren’t, on their own. Through Jesus’ teaching and through the Holy Spirit, they were equipped. And so are we.

Ponder:

What gifts have you been given to be the light of the world, sharing Christ’s love with the people around you?

Pray:

Lord, I want to be Your light in the world. Please give me the courage and wisdom to share Your love with everyone I meet.
