Today's Gospel: John 21:20-25

Jesus's disciples were not immune to territorial squabbles. In fact, this Gospel reveals that they were as human as we are today. They all loved Jesus and believed in Him, but being chosen by Him was both an honor and, at the same time, scary. The fear of death during their ministry was extremely high in their minds, I am sure, but they had enough faith in Jesus to stay with Him. Predictably, however, each wondered where he stood with Jesus. Jesus knew this and told Peter not to worry about what John was doing, but just to continue following Him.

So often, we as parents wonder what our children’s mission in life will be. What will be their calling? What does God plan for these young people? If only we could look into the future! All we can do, however, is trust in God’s will, do the best we can, and keep following Jesus ourselves. Just stay on the path, the narrow road, and have faith. God has plans for our children, but they really are not our concern. To be truthful, this is between God and our children. Much as Jesus told Peter in the Gospel.

Lately, as newly empty-nesters, I have been wondering what my next calling is and praying to God to reveal His new plans for me and my husband. Perhaps, just following and trusting Him is all we need to do right now.

Ponder:

What is our calling? Do we glorify the Lord with our talents wherever He places us?

Pray:

Dear Lord, help me to stay the course and not worry about the plans You have for us and our children. Help me to be patient in following You while I listen for Your calling.
