Today's Gospel: Matthew 5:27-32

Today’s Gospel talks about the rules of sin. The laws were laid out to the Jews about which sins not to commit, but Jesus tells them to go one step further by looking at the intent and space in their heart. He instructs them, if you have a debt settle it before you attend court, if you commit adultery in your thoughts, through divorce, or outside of marriage, you sin.

As St. John of the Cross once said, “Since the immense blessings of God can only enter and fit into an empty and solitary heart, the Lord wants you to be alone.” When we sin, our hearts are accompanied by iniquity that takes away room for Jesus.

It would be like inviting Him to sit in your home, but your house has not been fully cleaned or prepared. If our hearts have harbor lust, pride, resentment, or limitations on forgiveness, we have a partially dirty space prepared for Jesus. Jesus will still come into our home whether it's dirty or not. He wants to be there, but doesn’t He deserve to have a space fit for a king? This is why the Sacrament of Confession is such a gift. We can deep clean our hearts and learn to throw away and let go of what keeps us from receiving Him fully. His love is so immense that we need every space immaculate and available to contain it.

Jesus says,

“It is better for you to lose one of your members than to have your whole body go into Gehenna.” Matthew 5:30

Jesus knows we are imperfect; He only wants for us to regularly declutter and work to maintain a clean space (heart) for Him. We don’t throw away a house if it’s messy, but we must regularly attend to it with forgiveness, charity, perseverance, obedience, prayer, and the sacraments.

Ponder:

How clean is the home of your heart for Jesus? What can you do daily to maintain your home to receive Him?

Pray:

Lord, You know the interior of my heart. Help me to keep it clean so that I can fully receive You and prepare an immaculate space for You.
