Today's Gospel: Matthew 5:33-37

Today's Gospel offers a simple, practical lesson:

"Let your 'Yes' mean 'Yes,' and your 'No' mean 'No.' Anything more is from the Evil One." Matthew 5:37

This simple, common sense prescription is good advice for all of us, at all times, including our children. We know that deception is sinful, leads to further deception, and breeds lack of trust and other detrimental consequences.

Taken with today's first reading from Kings, we see that beyond simple honesty, God is advising us to commit wholeheartedly, to avoid being lukewarm.

As moms, how often do we commit to things halfheartedly, failing to follow through due to forgetfulness, difficulty in saying no, or being overwhelmed? How often do we do so in terms of faith and catechesis?

In this social media age, pride and good intentions tempt us to say yes to many good things, even in terms of faith and our families, biting off more than a busy mom can chew. Yes, to daily Mass and Rosary! Yes, to the homemade Jesse Tree! Yes, to Pinterest-worthy feast day celebrations! Yes, to every liturgical living suggestion!

And how often do our yeses end with us throwing our hands in the air and giving up - a default no?

How much better would it be were we to discern what is achievable for our families according to our circumstances and then follow through? Our yes then isn't a weak attempt at looking like the perfect Catholic family but an emphatic yes that bears real fruit.

Ponder:

Am I prudent in making commitments, only taking on obligations with a firm commitment to follow through?

Pray:

Lord, help me to grow in humility and fortitude, that I may be an example of one who is firm and reliable in my commitments, avoiding lukewarm assents for which I fail to follow through.
