Today's Gospel: Luke 9:11b-17

Enough. In Christ.

Ten years after her death, people still comment on my mother’s hospitality. “I don’t know how she did it. She could take two chicken legs and make a meal for eight.” Lacking her confidence, I think: “There’s not enough. It won’t be good enough.” I slide from, “I don’t have enough” into “I’m not good enough.”

In today’s Gospel, the disciples were operating from a “not enough” mentality: “Five loaves and two fish are all we have.” Not enough to feed this crowd. “Let them go away.” But Jesus took the “not enough” and blessed it into “more than enough.” The disciples had forgotten Who they were with—Who is enough.

Many of us wake up with “not enough” sleep and “not enough” energy, parent with “not enough” skill, and live with “not enough” love. The truth is none of us is “enough.” Jesus is the only “enough” and not just enough, but the source of infinite abundance. The crowd ate and had their fill, with twelve wicker baskets of fragments!

In Christ, we have enough wisdom to lead our families, enough faith to teach our children, enough money to buy what’s needed, and enough time to worship at Mass—and play with our children. With Jesus, we have enough! We have enough to raise our children well. We have enough love for our families and friends. We have enough for today. We have enough.

Scrambling for “enough” leaves us exhausted, defeated, and depressed. Living with faith leads to peace, satisfaction, and joy. My mom was a faith-filled woman. She had enough. She had Jesus. In Christ, we each are more than enough. This Sunday, as we come forward for communion, remember we are receiving the Body and Blood of Jesus, Who is infinitely enough.

Ponder:

What is one way you will fight the "not enough" mentality?

Pray:

Lord, help us to come to the Eucharist with open hearts to receive You, the source of all abundance. Help us to remember we are enough, in You!
