Today's Gospel: Matthew 7:21-29
The Gospel reading about the house built on rock reminds me of the childhood tale “The Three Little Pigs.” Remember how two of the pigs had wimpy structures that were blown down by the Big Bad Wolf? But the third, like the wiseman in today’s passage, built his with brick, which was resistant to the wolf’s blowing. No matter how hard that ravenous wolf huffed and puffed to bring down the brick house, it remained unmoved.
As I review these stories today, I see them from a different light, realizing that while both are about the materials involved, they’re also about something less obvious: the testing. After all, how did the wiseman, and that third pig, know about the rock and the brick? They likely had to learn over time. Both likely began using flimsier materials like their peers, only later realizing their inadequacies when put to the test by the weather or wolf.
It’s been decades since I first heard these stories. Since then, life has blown me around a bit. Wolves and bad weather have come and gone, and I haven't always felt equipped to withstand the storms and attempts by the wolves to knock me down. Often, I've had to run to the safety of others with stronger structures. But over time, my own house—indeed, my very soul—has grown sturdier. Despite some awfully wild weather and powerful huffing and puffing, I’ve become more resolute in faith and trust in God. Without those trials, who knows?
Now, I can see the wisdom in the testing. It wasn’t always pleasant but it served a purpose. Having withstood some powerful gale-force winds and blows and found my house still standing, and sturdy, I'm readier than ever to be a worthy shelter for others trying to find their way.
Ponder:
What if this life is really just about learning to resist the winds and the wolf so that we might reach the eternal security of the heavenly hearth?
Pray:
Dear Lord, often the challenges I’ve most resisted have been the very experiences I’ve needed to secure my structure more firmly in the place where it will never blow apart: Your heart. Please help me remember this when the next wind blows my way, and show me how to be a worthy, welcoming shelter for others.
