Today's Gospel: John 20:24-29

As we listen to today’s Gospel, we are told about a monumental teaching moment where Christ showed Thomas His wounds to prove who He was.

Yet, I feel compelled to remind you that John 20:8-9 states,

“Then the other disciple also went in, the one who had arrived at the tomb first, and he saw and believed. For they did not yet understand the scripture that he had to rise from the dead.”

Later we see that Mary of Magdala did't know Our Lord until He spoke to her.

Thomas was not alone in his uncertainty caused by unfamiliarity with the scriptures. Thomas was just emphatic in his doubt, stating he needed the proof of seeing and touching Jesus’ wounds. In today’s Gospel passage, Jesus gives Thomas the proof he needs. And Thomas proclaims, “My Lord and my God!”  He knew Jesus was there. I can imagine Thomas’ regret and humility when the Lord said,

“Have you come to believe because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed!”

Two-thousand years later, humanity still doubts, worries, and stresses. We need signs even though we know the Word. We have the examples of scripture and saints, and yet we still have days where our faith is lacking.

I’m so thankful for the daily reminders all around me in nature (sunrises and sunsets), daily Gospel readings, and friends who listen and pray. All these little things bring me back to Jesus during life’s trials.

God keeps His word, 100 percent of the time. Rest in that truth.

My name is Emily, and I struggle with anxiety/doubt. I am so very so thankful for God’s love and His lessons. Are you?

Ponder:

When I have doubted and Jesus has proven Himself to me, how has this strengthened my faith? Has it made me a better disciple?

Pray:

Dear Lord, forgive my lack of strength when my faith feels weak and I am filled with worry and doubt. Thank You for teaching me lovingly and redirecting my belief in You.
