Today's Gospel: Matthew 9:9-13

How quick we are to seek a remedy for an ache, pain, or an ailment! When there’s something wrong with our bodies, the natural response is either to go to an urgent care clinic or make an appointment with our regular practitioner. We have doctors for everything from our brains to our big toenails. When we are sick, we want to be healed.

What about when we are spiritually sick? It is much harder to admit that our souls are ailing than to admit our bodies are ailing. No one wants to be labeled as a sinner, and no one really likes the prospect of being held accountable for their sins. The Pharisees in today’s Gospel not only insist on ignoring their own sins, but they insist on not associating with anyone that they consider sinful, like tax collectors. Thus, they were appalled when our Lord sat at table having dinner with Matthew and others like him who had strayed from the fold. In the minds of the Pharisees, such “sinners” were unworthy of time, attention, and kindness.

Jesus’ response is meant not only for the Pharisees, but for all of us. He did not become incarnate to give a rounding “atta boy” to the faithful who devoutly followed the commandments. No, He came to call forward those lingering in the shadows, those who were spiritually sick and needed healing. He came to share His mercy with humankind and to show us how to be merciful to ourselves and others. He wants us to be unafraid to repent and seek a cure for our spiritual ailments. He calls us to Himself as the Divine Healer, the physician we all need but often neglect to call upon. He is there, waiting for you. Go to him!

Ponder:

What kind of spiritual ailment is most deeply rooted in my soul?

Pray:

Jesus, call me to Yourself as You called Matthew. Bring me into the realm of Your mercy. Heal me.
