Reflect on the call to evangelize and share God's gifts freely, embracing the miraculous potential of faith while living out Christian joy and service.
Today's Gospel: Matthew 10:7-15
Do we take this Gospel passage for granted? First, it commissions us to spread the Good News like the apostles. Indeed, we are called to evangelize. If you are a parent, begin with your children, but don’t shy away from friends, neighbors, co-workers, extended family, and even strangers. Be discerning but brave too. People are hungrier for the message of Christ than we think. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide you. If they aren’t open, simply “shake the dust from your feet” (Matthew 10:14).
Furthermore, these verses should fill us with awe! God’s heavenly gifts are available to us now. In a world entrenched in suffering, Jesus still work miracles. The apostles had gifts to cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse leapers, and drive out demons (Matthew 10:8). Do we believe that this is possible today? This is not out of our reach. Don’t underestimate God’s ability to offer you supernatural gifts. Ask for them! Believe that the Kingdom of Heaven is still at hand.
Whatever gifts have been given to us, both natural and supernatural, are from God. Our response to God’s generosity should be to share our goods freely.
Without cost you have received; without cost you are to give.” Matthew 10:9
We’re not to look for payment, accolades, equal returns, or even thanks. On a human level, that’s not easy. Yet, Christ is always calling us to walk the higher road. Our reward is in heaven (Matthew 6:1-2).
As Christians, we need to reflect something different. Our joy, love, and zeal rooted in Christ should be apparent. Hospitals and schools began in this country largely because of the Catholic Church. Let us continue in that apostolic tradition, through our lived Christian witness: charitable acts, prayer for others, and the belief that God still works miracles.
Ponder:
How can you witness to Christ? What gifts will you ask God to bless you with in prayer?
Pray:
Jesus, please give me apostolic zeal to do all that you are calling me to accomplish in Your name.
Pray Together:
Seek out a service opportunity to do together.
