Today's Gospel: Matthew 10:34-11:1

Running up the stairs half out of breath and talking double speed, my first-born son and his new friend, Sydney, entered. Tyler loudly proclaimed, “We’re thirsty.” I was so proud that he had remembered his Southern manners by being a polite host.

As I poured them each a glass of cool water, Tyler’s eyes grew wide. Tyler looked at Sydney, questioning. “Sydney, that is Christian water. Can you drink it?” We had only lived in Vernal, Utah, for a few months, but, apparently, the difference in culture was a bit confusing to my young son. I explained to my four-year-old that everyone who is thirsty can drink from our faucet. The fact that we are Christian does not affect the water. I do not know if he grasped the concept.

I always enjoy it when God makes scripture come to life. It reminds me to take the time to do little things with great love. Our daily actions are a witness.

“And whoever gives only a cup of cold water to one of these little ones to drink because he is a disciple—amen, I say to you, he will surely not lose his reward.” Matthew 10:42

It was never more evident to me than in Vernal, Utah, how our faith can divide. Tyler’s question came from knowing we were a Christian home and Sydney's was a Latter-day Saints (LDS) home. Most of the LDS community shunned us because of our vocal Christian stands. To her credit, Sydney’s mom let her children play with mine. Tyler, even as a little guy, had a welcoming heart. He was perplexed.

The world is a thirsty place. Pour them a glass of water, then invite them to take a sip of the “living water!”

Ponder:

How has your Catholic faith divided you from family or friends? How have you responded?

Pray:

Father, let me pour out Your love to all I meet whether they receive me or shun me. Let me welcome all into my life, my home, and my heart according to Your will!
