Today's Gospel: Matthew 12:14-21

As the Son of God, Jesus had to follow His Father’s will and timing during His earthly life. Jesus knew He would suffer, die, and rise. It was not up to the Pharisees or Jesus to decide when this would happen.

So Jesus removed Himself and tried to be out of sight from those who wanted to put Him to death. But the people followed Jesus. Because they needed Him desperately. They wanted healing. And the people knew Jesus loved them and would heal them.

It was not yet the time for Jesus to suffer, so it was necessary to keep quiet about the good Jesus did. Both the people who were healed and Jesus were to be quiet. He was not to call attention to Himself.

There is much to take from Isaiah’s quote that Matthew inserted into this passage.
  1. God’s timing must be followed.
  2. Big shows for attention are not necessary when doing God’s work.
  3. We are not to harm those who are hurting.
  4. We are chosen.
  5. We have a purpose.
If we look at those points in light of our own life and work, how are we doing? Do you live as a child of God, selflessly caring for others, rather than looking for rewards and accolades? When we believe that we are chosen and created for a particular purpose, it helps us make better daily decisions as to where our time and attention go.

It is difficult to think of Jesus asking His followers to not speak about the good that happened. He was waiting for the right time. God’s time.

Ponder:

Do I follow God’s timing in my life? Do I run ahead or lag behind?

Pray:

Father, Jesus was always obedient to You. Help me to be as obedient.
