Today's Gospel: Matthew 13:1-9
I enjoy having colorful, tidy flower beds in the areas around my home. There’s only one little problem: I really hate to weed. I usually wait until it looks like there’s a small war happening between the plants and the weeds (and the weeds look like they are winning) before I finally force myself to reclaim the area for the plants that are supposed to be there! Once the weeding is actually done, it always feels like such an accomplishment to look at the cleaned-up area and enjoy the colors and the sense of order. Every time I walk in and out of our front door, I can take in and appreciate the beauty of a well-manicured garden.
Sometimes my interior life is in a similar state as my garden. There are times that I’ve failed to do the work to keep things neat and tidy. The “weeds” of anxiety, fear, laziness, and distraction have grown untended and are stunting the growth of the beauty God is trying to nurture in my life. Thankfully, I know how to remove what doesn’t belong--by turning my full gaze back to God through prayer and confession. When I can remove the “weeds” that I’ve let grow, there’s so much more good soil available for God to use. And don’t we all want to be a bountiful harvest for God?
Ponder:
What is one of the "weeds" in your life that God is asking you to work on?
Pray:
Lord, thank You for the growth that You nurture in our hearts every day. Please help us to have ears to hear Your voice to know the area in our life that You want us to turn over to Your loving hands.
