Explore how the Parable of the Sower teaches us to cultivate a deeper connection with God's Word and nurture our spiritual growth amidst life's distractions.
Today's Gospel: Matthew 13:18-23
The Parable of the Sower is a well-known passage in Scripture. As a gardener, I can appreciate the imagery in this passage. I put the seeds in the ground and tend to them. I hope for them to take root and grow, but in the end, far fewer than I sow develop into adult plants that produce fruit and seeds of their own.
The same is true in our spiritual lives. I would venture to say that if you have taken the time and energy to read this Scripture passage and reflection, you want to be the fertile soil. You are working on your relationship with God. You not only want to hear the Word of God, you want it to become part of you, so that you can, in turn, grow in faith and be an example to others.
But it isn’t always that easy, is it? I know there are many times I read the day’s Scripture readings only to forget about them a few minutes later when I get caught up in the busyness of daily life. There are rocks and thorns all around us, working to keep us from fully embracing the Word of God and having it take root in our lives. It takes a concerted effort to focus on Scripture and have it become part of us, so that we carry it with us and it becomes a core part of who we are as people. In spite of our setbacks and the many temptations that surround us, we have to keep striving to become those plants that bear fruit.
Ponder:
How can you work to make the Word of God more a part of your life?
Pray:
Dear God, help me to focus on your Word and make it an essential part of my life.
Pray Together:
Discuss the ways you can work to have Scripture be more a part of your family’s life. Perhaps you can choose a favorite Scripture verse to memorize.
