Today's Gospel: Matthew 20:20-28
In this Gospel, James and John’s mother asks Jesus for favored seating in His Kingdom for her sons. It is very like a mother to want the best for her sons and to be bold enough to ask for it, even when it may be unrealistic or impolite. The heart of a mother knows no bounds. Jesus knew and understood that and did not remonstrate her, but he turned to James and John and asked them, “Are you able to drink the cup that I am to drink?” They answered, “We are able.” Did that secure the favored place? No. Jesus told them they would drink the cup He was to drink, but to sit at His right hand and left was not His to give. It was already prepared by His Father for others.
The words “prepared by” should cause us to rejoice. Why? Because everything has been thought out by the Father, including our places in the Kingdom. Recall John 14: 1-3, where Jesus tells us that He is going to prepare a place for us. James’ and John’s places were already prepared. Yours and mine are already prepared. The Father is just waiting for us to finish our work. We do not have to jockey for spots in God’s Kingdom. Our places are waiting for us.
Ponder:
Do I trust God enough to accept He is preparing the perfect place for me in His Kingdom?
Pray:
Father in heaven, grant that I may accept with joy and deep faith that You have prepared for me and all those entrusted into my care, the perfect place for us to live with You for eternity.
