Daily Gospel Reflection for July 26, 2026

Today's Gospel: Matthew 13:44-52

Today's Gospel begs us to ask ourselves the question, “What do I value?” It could be family, stuff, finances, comfort, or property and position, but it’s a good exercise to pencil that list out and have a look at it. Now, let’s say you’ve made out your list and someone very close, like a spouse or parent, comes home and tells you they found something so valuable that they sold everything and liquidated every asset you had to buy it. That could mean that most of the things on your list are now gone. What would that feel like? Would you be curious or furious?

Jesus uses some parables today that illustrate this exact scenario, and it was hard for people to grasp. It’s almost impossible for us to imagine something valuable enough to trade everything for, and this is exactly the point Jesus was trying to make. There is, in fact, only one thing great enough to cash in all that we own and all that we value for, and that one thing is life in heaven with our Creator. Jesus is asking us to look at that list of ours and ponder where He sits on the list. Living as a disciple of Jesus does come at a cost, and sometimes we have to give up or trade off some of the stuff we’ve become attached to because it’s tripping us up as we try to make our way to heaven.

Ponder:

Three questions to prayerfully ponder: What do I value? Where is Jesus on that list? What things do I need to “sell” or get rid of to make room for the greatest treasure?

Pray:

Loving Father, help me seek You with all my heart, help me love You more than anything else, and give me the courage to follow You, my one great treasure.

Pray Together:

Share the treasure of time and loving attention with someone lonely or hurting.
