Daily Gospel Reflection for July 27, 2026

Today's Gospel: Matthew 13:31-35

I love fishing out in my kayak on local lakes and ponds in my area of Southeast Massachusetts. One night, after a great night of fishing, I was paddling back in, and as I looked up, I saw all the stars and planets shining in the night sky. I suddenly felt very small. Who am I in such a large world, such a large universe? I felt a bit insignificant. It reminded me of the mustard seed in today’s parable. It is something that starts so small but grows into one of the largest plants and becomes a home for the birds.

Saint Teresa of Calcutta said, "Not all of us can do great things, but we can do small things with great love." The things we do may seem so small--holding a door open for somebody or helping somebody who just dropped all their notes at school, but that can have a much bigger impact on the person we are helping.

In this parable, Jesus was talking about the Kingdom and its humble beginnings, and even today, it applies to us; we need to lift up the Kingdom and contribute to it, no matter how small our help may seem to us, because it matters to the Kingdom of God. We also need to trust in God, who can take our small works and grow them into something far larger than we could ever imagine. Saint Thérèse of Lisieux tells us to "remember that nothing is small in the eyes of God. Do all that you do with love."

In what ways can I remember helping somebody in a small way that had a bigger impact than expected?

Pray:

Holy Spirit, please guide my family to where Your help is needed most, no matter how small that help may seem.

Pray Together:

Each day, ask the Holy Spirit to guide you and to help you be more aware of those whom you will encounter this day who may need your help.
