Today's Gospel: Matthew 13:44-52

Even in my undergrad years, I was drawn to study courses in religion and philosophy, where the goal was the pursuit of truth and therein the Creator of Truth. Some, not all, however, knew Truth as divine, yet each sought to explain our existence, the world, and all creation. What was it that compelled them to search in the first place, and how far would they look? Would they be willing to give everything they had to find that pearl of wisdom, or treasure in the field?

We face these same questions today and yet far too often are tempted to give but a cursory glance for truth and settle for the answer the world has offered. In scripture, we are asked time and time again to be discerning when it comes to what we consider important in our lives. The disciples here were being asked not to discard the law, but rather to recognize the greater treasure that was at the heart of the Good News- salvation. As disciples of Christ, we are both students, continually learning and seeking to follow the Gospel, and teachers by the very lives we live. And it is our very heart and mind which is the “storeroom” for this treasure.

Yet, as Jesus’s words reveal, we are not to keep these pearls and treasure to ourselves but are to bring these forth to be shared and witnessed by others. Imagine just how many walked that same “field” and never noticed the treasure that lay within, or inquired as to the source of the joy you’ve found. We who have seen God at work in our daily lives know the love, grace, and mercy in Christ’s sacrifice at the cross. What a joy it is to be bearers of the kingdom of heaven!

Ponder:

Where or with whom do I shy away from sharing the treasure of the kingdom of heaven? What would it be like to share this treasure without holding back?

Pray:

Father, what a treasured gift it is to come to know You and Your Son Christ Jesus! You are my everything and I desire to share my life in You freely and without hesitation. Allow me the grace in this day to do just that.
