Daily Gospel Reflection for July 30, 2026

Reflect on the Gospel of Matthew 13:47-53, exploring the themes of sin, righteousness, and the transformative power of Jesus's love in our lives.

Today's Gospel: Matthew 13:47-53

I love sorting things. There’s just something about separating things based on some common characteristic that feels right. This may possibly stem from my childhood Sesame Street days. While I’m not sure I would enjoy sorting through a net full of fish, Jesus gives us a pretty good image here of sin and righteousness and how they will not coexist in eternity.

It can be difficult to reconcile some things we find in the Bible. Scripture tells us that nothing can separate us from the love of God, and then we hear Jesus say the evil will be separated from the righteous and will be tossed into a furnace of fire. Head-scratcher for sure, but pressing into the heart of Jesus and sinking into our confidence in His love for us, a few reminders shed light on this seeming contradiction: We are all daughters and sons of the King, made in His image and likeness, and nothing can separate us from His love. He died for us so we could live forever with Him in heaven.

The Kingdom of Heaven is among us, and we are the righteous Jesus speaks of here because He lives within us. The evil He speaks of is the sin being separated from us and cast into the fire. The evil is not a person; it is being separated from the person and cast into the fire. Our part is to participate with this interior sorting and allow His grace to work in us by receiving the sacraments, kneeling before Him in Adoration, and reading and meditating on His Word. Today, let’s surrender our efforts to be good enough and allow ourselves to be drawn into Jesus’s Sacred Heart so He can carry us into eternity all by Himself.

Slowly recite the Canticle of Zachariah. What does the phrase “He has come to His people and set them free” mean to you personally?

Pray:

Jesus, help me to remember that I belong to You and that nothing can separate me from Your love. Thank You for working such great sorting miracles within me so I may live with You in heaven forever.
