Today's Gospel: Matthew 13:44-46
In today’s Gospel, Jesus uses two similes. The first compares the kingdom of heaven to a treasure buried in a field, and the second compares it to a pearl of great price. Both are things so valuable that a person would sell all they have to go and get it.
Would you give everything you have to gain the kingdom of heaven? How much would you be willing to sacrifice?
It is so easy for us to want to keep the things we feel we’ve earned, but really everything comes from God, and we are only stewards of our belongings here for a short time.
On this feast of St. Ignatius of Loyola, let’s offer up the words of his Suspice Prayer. They are the words of someone willing to sell all that they have in order to gain the kingdom of heaven.
Take, Lord, and receive all my liberty, my memory, my understanding, and my entire will, All I have and call my own.
You have given all to me. To you, Lord, I return it.
Everything is yours, do with it what you will. Give me only your love and your grace. That is enough for me.
Ponder:
How tightly am I clinging to my own plans for my life? How might God be calling me to let it all go?
Pray:
Lord, I offer You everything that I have because I know that it all comes from You. Give me only Your love and Your grace.
