Join us as we reflect, ponder, and pray together inspired by today's Gospel.

Today's Gospel: Matthew 13:47-53

As a parent, we ask many things of our children that they may choose to accept, reject, or fail to understand. We, too, may remember a time, not so distant, whereby we did what was asked of us only to discover later the wisdom in doing so. For most of us, there are, in a given day, a number of decisions that affirm or deny the truth of the Gospel in our lives. Therein lies the invitation to self-reflection and compassion with the challenge inherent in the journey ahead for ourselves and others.

The response to Jesus’ parables throughout the Gospel was often met with mixed acceptance and understanding, but that did not keep Him from reaching out time and time again. Yet, what is our response to those who seemingly do not accept the Gospel? Do we attempt to do the sorting ourselves, judging who we feel to be worthy or becoming impatient at the time for the Gospel to take effect? Or instead, do we seek to build the Kingdom, understanding that God, who sees all and reads hearts, should be the real decision-maker? Human judgment is by its very nature flawed and easily fooled, so Jesus seeks to underscore in this passage who really is in charge.

Another point here is what Jesus doesn’t say. He doesn’t say only one type of fish will be caught, but rather fish of every kind. Likewise, He doesn’t say when we are ready or when the nets have some fish, but when the nets are full. Trust is required here, both in God’s keen judgment and His timing. What is being asked of us today is a desire to follow and a willingness to cast a net and build the Kingdom while leaving all the rest to God.

Ponder:

When there is a difference of opinion with others, is my focus more on my truth or allowing God to lead and guide all involved? What significant experience from my past might be shaping my perception of the Kingdom of Heaven?

Pray:

Lord Jesus, help me to look within and see the ways that You call me to be more in line with Your will for my life. When I am tempted to become frustrated with those around me, let me learn how to be compassionate and patient, trusting that You are still at work in the world.
