Daily Gospel Reflection for August 1, 2026

Explore the significance of friendship and discipleship in times of suffering, and how we can support each other through prayer and compassion.

Today's Gospel: Matthew 14:1-12

“His disciples came and took away the corpse and buried him; and they went and told Jesus.” Matthew 14:12

I can imagine this verse happening both in this Gospel and in our lives. I can see John’s disciples, together and broken-hearted, burying their teacher. And once they have done the physical work of carrying John’s body, burying him, and weeping over him, they go to Jesus.

They were John’s disciples, so why did they go to Jesus? Perhaps because Jesus and John were relatives, because John loved Jesus, because they knew in some way Jesus had what they needed to carry them through this moment in time.

John’s disciples show us a pattern for friendship and discipleship.

When our friends suffer—from sickness, loss, anxieties—we can show up. We can listen in the hard spaces, provide practical help, give an embrace. We can be willing to stand in the hard space with them.

And, we go and tell Jesus. We pray for our friend and pray that we would have total faith and trust in God’s plans. We keep our eyes on the cross, believing Jesus knows every suffering and that suffering is not the end. 

Ponder:

Whom can you reach out to in your life who is suffering in some way?

Pray:

Jesus, give us the courage to be Your compassionate hands and heart for those in our lives who need You today.

Pray Together:

How can your family practice a corporal work of mercy this week? How can your family practice a spiritual work of mercy this week?
