Today's Gospel: Matthew 14:22-36
How frail and vulnerable we humans are. In these fifteen verses, the Apostles are frightened by waves, wind, a presumed ghost, and drowning. We are susceptible to natural and supernatural forces with which we cannot contend. From wildfires and earthquakes to microscopic viruses and bacteria to demonic attack.
We live with the illusion that our knowledge, resourcefulness, and technology can preserve us from harm, but when we, like Peter, are stripped of every firm foundation, we can only cry out, "Lord, save me!"
Then we can take comfort in knowing that our salvation comes only from God. Matthew tells us that Jesus "immediately" caught Peter, confirming in deed what he had just told the Apostles: "Do not be afraid."
Matthew doesn't record the Apostles' answer to Jesus's question "Why did you doubt?" Jesus, however, provides the reason in how He addresses them as "you of little faith." It's through humble faith in God, then, that we become strong, confident in God's extravagant love for us.
Ponder:
Do I allow the illusion of control to mask my total dependence on God? Do I succumb to fear, failing to trust in the Lord?
Pray:
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, help me to grow in humility, recognizing that my strength comes from You alone. When I am afraid, allay my fears and remind me of Your tender care.
