Explore how daily crosses and small sacrifices can deepen your relationship with Christ, providing strength and grace in life's challenges.
Today's Gospel: Matthew 16:24-28
Today’s Gospel is very direct. Jesus does not shy away from declaring that our life will be met by crosses. Due to original sin, we cannot expect to live a life without some form of affliction. Everyone has some kind of difficulty.
If we had it our way, we would certainly prefer a sorrow-free life. Understandably, Simon of Cyrene wanted nothing to do with Jesus’s travail. Yet, he was coerced into carrying the cross. Do you think he was unfortunate or fortunate for helping? In that providential moment of misery, Simon met Jesus. This encounter with the God-man forever changed his life. When handed a cross, we can choose to find Jesus in it too. These occasions have the potential to grow us, stretch us, and deepen our relationship with Jesus.
Jesus does not promise us anguish-free living, but He does declare that He is with us. “In the world you will have trouble, but take courage, I have conquered the world.” (John 16:33) When Paul had the stigmata, or thorn in his flesh, he begged the Lord to remove it. Instead, Jesus responded, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness.” (2 Corinthians 12:9) Jesus is with us in our suffering when we unite ourselves to Him. Ask for the grace to endure.
This is the case not just in the big sufferings, but the little offerings too. Throughout the day, parents are constantly given moments to lay down their life for their children. This sacrificial living is found in diaper changes, cooking, surprise spill clean-up, laundry, attentiveness to ill kids, bed time rituals, and more. In your vocation, you are constantly invited to serve Christ by serving others. This faithfulness to the cross, when it comes, is the road to heaven.
Ponder:
How can a God-given cross (or even small daily offerings) bring you closer to Christ?
Pray:
Jesus, help me find You today in every moment, the highs and the lows!
Pray Together:
Ask your children to help out around the house or assist a neighbor as an act of charity.
