Today's Gospel: Matthew 17:22-27

Today’s Gospel seems to have a discordant message.

"'The Son of Man is to be handed over to men, and they will kill Him, and He will be raised on the third day.'

And they were overwhelmed with grief.” Matthew 17: 22-23

But then continues with Christ asking Peter about the temple tax.

Death and taxes, two things my dad said are the only guarantees in life.

Many complain about taxes. I remember my youngest asking why we had to pay them. I told him it was our way of being responsible citizens. He then asked why I looked sad writing the check. I  told him honestly that I was not sad, but it cost a lot of money to be responsible, to share with those that have less.

He told me he never wanted to have more, something I still smile about.

Saint Jane Frances de Chantal, whose feast day is today, knew all about sadness. As the patron saint of mothers, widows, and wives, she knew how grief over what is lost can test the boundaries of one’s faith but she persevered.  Just as Christ persevered throughout His Passion for us, paying the ultimate tax so we could have everlasting life. As the Apostles persevered to spread the Good News and grow His Church. And as we must persevere when life becomes difficult and dark. We show our families how to grow closer to Him, stronger in faith.

“Trust in the Lord with all our heart, on your own intelligence do not rely; In all your ways be mindful of him, and he will make straight your paths.” Proverbs 3: 5-6

Ponder:

When life blindsides you with an unwelcome surprise, what is your go-to response?

Pray:

Lord, help me to trust more fully in Your plan for my life. Help me to persevere even in the darkest moments of this life on earth.
