Today's Gospel: Matthew 19:13-15

As my own children grow, I find that my mother's heart changes and grows with them. When they were born, they permanently claimed a piece of my heart devoted only to them and their nourishment and wellbeing. As they grow older, I am finding that while I still need to nourish them and nurture their wellbeing, my heart is now consumed with efforts to guide them into becoming good human beings, and solid stewards of their Catholic faith.

I worry through mentoring them to make good decisions that do not put their lives and hearts at risk. Rather monumental tasks, to be sure. Amidst all of this, I tend to try and take control of things, thinking that it is all up to me. It is my responsibility, and my husband's, to attend to our children's needs, of course.

But Jesus reminds us in today's Gospel that we are not alone, that He loves our children, and wants us to rest in His love and care for them, as well. “Let the children come to me, and do not prevent them; for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” We are not isolated in our parenting journey, and while lovingly worrying about our children is quite normal, we need to remind ourselves that Jesus loves them and wants what is best for them, too.

Our worries can bear more fruit directed in prayer for them and their own life's journey. While we cannot always be there with them, Jesus can, and He will watch over the most precious gifts that are our children.

Ponder:

What is one concrete way in which I can let my worry about my children rest in Jesus's loving care?

Pray:

Jesus, I know that you love my children and that you always long for them to come to You. Help me to abandon my mother's heart for them into your loving care.
