Reflection by Emily Davis

Today's Gospel: Matthew 19:3-12

People who are of this world walk away from marriage and commitment so quickly. Have you noticed that? But take heart, my friends – we are God’s people, and we are committed to making marriage work. Right!?

In verse 9, Jesus says,

“I say to you, whoever divorces his wife (unless the marriage is unlawful) and marries another commits adultery.”

This passage has always made me uncomfortable because I married a man who was divorced twice and brought three children to our marriage. Yes, both marriages were annulled and we are right with the Church. When we met, I was committed to becoming Catholic and though it took several years, it was all worth it because God ordained it that we  become Catholic together.

I was an older bride, well into my career when I married a military man (who by the way is still working for the military) who has two ex-wives and all the drama that comes with that. I will share only this: The first year or two, both of us would have paid to get out of the marriage. I’m just being honest. But we worked through it all, and as two people who did not come from loving family backgrounds, we have built this crazy, wonderful life. We are both still bull-headed and make our fair share of mistakes, but we are both truly thankful for God’s hand in our marriage and lives. We continue to work on our relationship with Him, through His Word.

“Therefore, what God has joined together, man must not separate.”

I would be remiss if I didn’t make a statement of thanks to our priests, nuns, and sisters who vow celibacy and commitment in serving God and the Body of Christ. That cannot be easy, and yet, what great examples for all spouses to follow.

Ponder:

When marriage (and other relationships) are difficult, you cannot work through problems without turning to God for answers. The question is – are you willing to work with your partner and God to conquer all life throws at your marriage?

Pray:

Dear Lord, thank You for being in this marriage with us and providing the strength and commitment we need to slay life's obstacles and stay committed to our vocation! Thank You for being our rock and armor in this crazy world. May You continue to bless us for many years to come and let our marriage bless others.
