Explore the challenge of prioritizing faith over worldly distractions in this reflection on Matthew 19:23-30, emphasizing the call to a deeper relationship with Jesus.
Today's Gospel: Matthew 19:23-30
I love to sew, but as I have grown older, threading the needle is my least favorite part. While I now make good use of needle-threading tools, I’m certain even those would not help in getting a camel through the eye. So it is with a rich man getting into heaven.
Maybe Jesus is being unreasonable; maybe we can have our cake and eat it too. Can’t we want Jesus and have everything else too? The comforts of home, nice clothing, plentiful food and drink, and maybe a nice car. Doesn’t seem like too much to ask. But Jesus does not want to be one of many things we possess. He doesn’t want only a piece of our heart, He wants all of it. He wants to be our only desire because He knows that we will only find the fullness of life through an intimate friendship with Him. He knows that this life is filled with distractions that keep our gaze turned from Him or resign him to the periphery. God has given us things on this earth to assist us in the praise and service of Him alone, and the danger comes when our trust shifts away from Him and to the illusion that wealth itself is the provider and protector.
It's a slow fade, for sure. We work hard, we follow the Commandments, and we go to Confession when we fall short. Then one day we look up and we are attached to things, people, comfort, social status, or whatever snare has been laid for us to move our sights away from Him. Resisting the world’s sparkle may be impossible for us, but Jesus says it’s not impossible for Him, and He promises a hundredfold return and eternity with Him in heaven if we stay focused.
Ponder:
What sparkles do I find myself attracted to before God? Where is the majority of my time, money, and attention going?
Pray:
Jesus, meek and humble of heart, make our hearts like unto Thine. Detach me from everything that separates or distracts me from You and help me to keep my eyes fixed on You.
Pray Together:
Gather together to pray a family Rosary. Before beginning, have each person think of or share out loud one thing they would like God to help them detach from.
