Today's Gospel: Matthew 20:1-16
“Are you envious because I’m generous?”
Perceived injustices can bring out the worst in us. When we strive to do what is right and fair, work a full day for a full day’s wage, how indignant we become when an act of generosity upends the model. It seems Jesus wants us to know that what is justice to the world is not the same as God’s justice. Acts of generosity remove “earning” from the equation.
The purpose of parables is to give us a glimpse of the heart of God. To teach us about His character. They also teach us a bit about our own hearts. Whether we choose to work in His field when we are seven or we show up when we’re fifty-seven, He offers the same reward—eternal life.
The challenge for those who labor longer is to resist becoming self-righteous. The duration isn’t the point. We don’t earn extra points in the kingdom of God for each year we log as His disciples. God wants us to shift our own hearts to more closely resemble His.
It’s not a scorecard. It’s grace. May we change our perceptions to be grateful for the additional help in the field instead of worrying about how our reward compares to our neighbor’s.
Ponder:
Will you ask God to show you the value of grace in a world that is more concerned with justice?
Pray:
Dear Lord, when I am tempted to keep score, help me remember the times when I have received Your mercy undeservedly. Show me ways to extend mercy to those who may not deserve it, simply to offer them a glimpse of Your heart.
