Today's Gospel: Matthew 22:1-14
We are all invited to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Today’s parable shows us two things we are to do in order to accept: we must show up, and we must change.
Today, as in Jesus’ day, many refuse to come. We easily become too busy or preoccupied with other things, or we don’t understand exactly what we are being invited to.
But, as important as it is to show up, it is not enough. We must also allow the invitation to change us. To allow God to change us.
When we come to Christ, we cannot remain as we had been. Jesus wants to transform our hearts, to help us see and follow a better way than we had known before.
And, like a wedding garment, it will cost us something. Little by little, we exchange each piece of clothing in order to be clothed in Christ. We die to self in order to take Him into our hearts and into our lives, to be transformed into His image. We give up sinful tendencies and selfishness and allow God to purify us.
As we allow ourselves to be clothed in such a way, we enter more and more deeply into the Kingdom.
Such is true of going to Mass. We don’t just show up. We give of ourselves and receive. We allow the Word and the Eucharist to soak into our minds and hearts and slowly transform us.
It is also true of the domestic church, where we interact as families and raise our children. We are called to help our children and those we love to come to God and give our lives to Him. To accept the invitation to the wedding feast and, together, put on Christ so that we may rejoice with Him there.
Ponder:
Have I fully accepted the invitation to the wedding feast? Do I show up in the ways I am called to, and do I allow God to transform and purify me through my participation?
Pray:
Lord, please call me and lead me. Take my yes and cloth me with Yourself, and help me to also lead others, especially my family, to You and to full participation in Your Kingdom.
