Daily Gospel Reflection for August 21, 2026

Explore the essence of love in today's Gospel reflection, emphasizing our duty to love God and our neighbors as ourselves for a fulfilling spiritual life.

Today's Gospel: Matthew 22:34-40

The Ten Commandments are summed up into two principles: love God and love your neighbor.

When we love God with all our hearts, all our souls, and all our minds, we will naturally not put anyone or anything before Him. We will naturally not want to offend Him. Also, we will naturally want to keep holy the sabbath and attend Mass. We’ll feel compelled to do these things out of love for the Lord.

When we love our neighbor, we care about that person. We see that person as a child of God, made in His image and likeness. We look out for the wellbeing of our neighbor not only physically and mentally, but spiritually as well. We care for that person’s soul. In that way, we won’t want to hurt, lie to, or covet our neighbors. We will look out for their wellbeing and take joy in their happiness.

The two go hand-in-hand. If we love God fully, we will want to care for His children. If we’re loving on our neighbors, we will be honoring God. It’s a circle.

It’s important to note that Jesus says to love our neighbor as ourselves. You, too, are God’s child. You, too, are worthy of love. Are you caring for yourself? We aren’t called to be selfish of course, but we should care for ourselves in other ways such as self-worth, modesty, and good health. Jesus took care of Himself on earth. He went away to rest. He ate and drank. So we should care for ourselves in the ways necessary to fulfill His purpose for our lives.

If we’re following these two Commandments well, then we’re fulfilling all of them.

Ponder:

Am I loving God and neighbor in the ways He asks me to?

Pray:

Lord, help me to honor You in all I think, do, and say, and help me to love my neighbor as You do.

Pray Together:

Talk about the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy and pick one or two to do together. You might donate food or clothing locally or you might visit a loved one or pray for the dead.
