Join us as we reflect, ponder, and pray together inspired by today's Gospel.

Today's Gospel: Mark 6:17-29

Most of us are not going to face the same fate as St. John the Baptist when we share the truth of the Gospels. We will probably not be imprisoned, and we will probably not have our head served on a platter to an enemy.

Our body may not die, but there still may be a kind of death. We may be humiliated and face the death of our reputation. We may be turned down for a job or promotion and face the death of a goal. We may give something up by choice, something that we want but are not called to have. We may take on something we’d rather not.

John the Baptist was Jesus’ cousin, yet that relationship did not save him from much suffering. Similarly, as Jesus’ chosen family, baptized Christians are not promised comfort. We are not promised physical safety.

What we are promised is what we know John the Baptist received after his death. We are promised that if we stay close to Jesus, if we follow His commands, if we carry the cross He gives us (and carries with us), we will join Him in heaven.

Ponder:

How is God calling you to share the truth of the Gospel today?

Pray:

Lord, You loved your cousin, John the Baptist, as You love me. Help me to follow You with the same courage and faith that he did.
