Today's Gospel: Matthew 25:1-13

Ten ladies were given the same task, but only half were fully committed. Five wise ones brought flasks of oil along with their lamps and were all set to light the way for the bridegroom. The frivolous five had lamps, but didn’t bother to bring any fuel. The ten ladies napped as they waited, with the wise ones sleeping peacefully, content with their day’s work. They were free in conscience, confident in their purpose and mission, and eager to light the path for the bridegroom and those who wanted to see him. When the bridegroom finally came, they were ready to serve.

The others? Scrambling in the dark, they begged the wise to give them some of their goods. “Go . . . and buy some for yourselves,” they replied point-blank. The foolish came to the party too late.

Some of the not-so-wise folks of today think that the sacrament of Baptism is the only thing they need to enter the heavenly courts. Yes, it’s the door opener, but unless one lives out the Baptismal promises, she'll be left in the dark. Living a wholesome, holy life is the fuel required for igniting the light of Christ in ourselves and others.

Be ready for Christ’s coming. Stay energized with the Mass and sacraments, prayer and fasting, studying Sacred Scripture, living the beatitudes, and other devotions. Saying no to those who aim to drain our spiritual oil preserves the treasure of Truth entrusted to us. We have a responsibility, and we guard our resources so that we are able to respond. We are entrusted with a deposit of faith and expected to perform a duty, to bring the light of Christ into this dark world. Our lamp will burn out and be useless on the day of His coming unless we remain filled with grace.

Ponder:

What holy habits do you have in place that keep you fueled and ready for the coming of Christ?

Pray:

Dear Lord, You have blessed me with material and spiritual resources. Help me to use them wisely in this life, so as to enter into the heavenly kingdom.
